An orphan boy in the Kingdom of the Isles is apprenticed to a magician just as a rift opens and invaders from another world arrive. Pug's journey carries him from the court at Crydee to the Empire of Kelewan, where he must discover the limits of his power and his place in a war between worlds. UK editions sometimes divide this novel into Apprentice and Master.
