After being captured by pirates as a child, Sassinak escapes and builds a life in the Fleet, where she becomes a captain dedicated to hunting raiders. The novel opens the Planet Pirates sequence and introduces the military and political setting shared with later books. Anne McCaffrey co-wrote it with Elizabeth Moon.
