The Free Bards
In the land of Alanda, independent musicians called the Free Bards make music outside the strict Bardic Guild and help one another survive. The Bardic Voices novels follow Rune and her companions as music draws them into danger and political struggles. A Cast of Corbies belongs to the related Bardic Choices strand, where the Church’s control of magic threatens the Free Bards. Start with The Lark and the Wren, then follow publication order; the two strands can be read as connected but distinct adventures.
