Outlander Universe
The Outlander Universe contains the nine published Claire and Jamie Fraser novels and the related Lord John Grey mysteries and novellas. New readers should start with Outlander and follow the main novels in publication order. The Lord John route is optional: it can stand alone, but readers following the wider story should begin it after Voyager. You do not need to complete Lord John to understand the main Outlander sequence.

Outlander
Outlander follows former wartime nurse Claire Randall and Highlander Jamie Fraser through a long, time-spanning historical story. New readers should begin with Outlander, also published in the UK as Cross Stitch, and continue through the nine published main novels in publication order. The related Lord John Grey stories add optional context after Voyager but are not required to follow Claire and Jamie's central story.

The Lord John Grey series collects historical mysteries, novels and shorter stories centred on Lord John, a recurring figure in Outlander. It can be read independently, but readers approaching it through the wider universe should finish Voyager first. Publication order is the simplest route through the catalogued stories; the whole series is optional companion reading and is not required for the main Claire and Jamie sequence.
